rs 1 500 crore Delhi government releases Rs 500 crore for unauthorised colonies

Delhi government on Friday released Rs 500 crore, a day after Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that residents of 1,797 unauthorised colonies in the city would soon get ownership rights to their properties. Home to mostly migrants who flocked to the capital over the past few decades for a better life, most of these colonies have lagged behind the rest of Delhi in terms of infrastructure growth and other facilities. Officials of the urban development and revenue departments held a series of meetings at the secretariat on Friday. According to sources, the Union housing and urban affairs ministry has prepared a draft cabinet note for giving land ownership rights to people in these colonies. "The Centre has sought suggestions of Delhi government before the draft cabinet note is finalised," a source said.
